Maine DHHS Steals Child Support Payments
The Child Support Enforcement arm of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is by far one of the best examples of how Maine Government has failed. Ever wonder where all those child support payments they collect are going?

I've dealt with the Caribou child support DHHS people and I think they are the worst in the state! While I'm sure they deal with a lot of dead-beat parents they have no interest in helping the good ones. I tried for two weeks to get a simple answer out of them and was led in circles, lied to, etc. Our tax dollars hard at work!
I spent most of the last 20 years dealing with DHHS trying to get answers such as "How much money is owed to me" "How much money is being paid in for my minor children" and What is the total of bills paid on my kids behalf. None of these questions were ever answered. The one way I did get some answers was to go into their office every week and sit there until someone came out to talk with me. Sooner or later they sick of seeing you and then they will do something but I never got any answers. I do get child support but don't know how long it will be coming in and how much is owed. I KNOW THE FATHER HAS PAID SO WHAT'S THE ANSWER? wHERE IS MY MONTHLY STATEMENT? EVERY OTHER BILL I HAVE SENDS ME A STATEMENT.
In 1996 I was named as father to a child I did not even know I had. She was five and for the next two years CSE would take 100% of my paycheck towards a $20,000.00 back child support debt while I faught through the courts to even see my daughter. When my daughter turned 7 years old I saw her for the first time. CSE treated me like a dead beat and had no intentions of helping me...They stole from me not only my money but my repsect, self worth and my reputation... GOD knows everything.
My sister was the victim in this case, this worker was stealing her child support and there was many stories this worker gave her when the money just vanished into thin air.... I myself feel that I am being robbed of my child support as well. The father of my girls sends alot of money in a month, but yet the state manages to keep more than half, and claim that they are owed this in back tanf....when I ask since I was only on it for a few months, and they have been more than compensated since they also have kept more than half of his income tax for three years...why don't they answer us????
DHHS fails all parents in maine. THey never are reachable be phone then give attitude. If you don't like your job leave. Otherwise help the people
DHHS does not steal your money. Take responsibility for your own actions. DHHS did not make you have sex. If we work towards the common interest of the child good things will happen. So get out of denial and take responsibility.
I don't believe we can seriously equate sex and children with the fact that DHHS failed to have the safeguards in place forcing DHHS workers to be accountable for all child support payments they are in receipt of. There are many under-supervised Enforcement Agents who are wasting taxpayers' money sitting in courtrooms listening to cases instead of remaining in their office at DHHS and getting their paperwork done. The Court always sends the Enforcement Agent copies of any orders which affect child support. There is absolutely no need for any Enforcement Agent to waste hours a day sitting in the courtroom listening to all the dirt when all they need is the bottom line--The Child Support Order which the Judge signs at the end of the case--the Child Support Order, a copy of which is always sent to DHHS. Enforcement is a joke. Enforcement Agents spend too much time making unnecessary trips out of the office and not getting the required work done that is laying on their desk. Evidently no one is looking over their shoulder or supervising them.
I have dealt honestly with DHHS for over 13 years. Even when I was un-employeed I paid the support I owed plus paying down medical bills for an elective procedure (braces) which I objected too and like many parents I simply could not afford. (So much for shared parental rights!)
Now here we are a month from the end and they have decided to play hardball with me. Until this week I have always payed monthly as agreed with the previous case worker. Now the new DHHS case worker has decided that because of that Iam in arrears and froze my savings account!
It could have been taken care of by a simple phone call! But instead they chose to clasify me instantly as a deadbeat. Now because of DHSS's past history in regards to confidential information I have had to close all my accounts.
I was palnning to end this nightmare in a dignified fashion now they have taken away even that. The irony is I asked that the childsupport be handled through DHHS to avoid being harassed by my ex.
Obviously, the person who made the comment "DHHS does not steal your money" either works for DHHS or one of the other bloated, wasteful, inefficient, overstaffed departments of this poorly-run state. DHHS steals from EVERYONE who pays taxes.
Many of us HAVE taken responsibility; made many sacrifices to provide good homes for our families only to have DHHS hit us with fraudulent claims of unpaid child support.
DHHS are like market makers for socialism: they take money from whomever they can and redistribute it any way they can. Their goal isn't to help people; rather it is to move as much money as they can, regardless of whom they are helping or hurting, and portray themselves as being an efficient, much-needed entity (if your job was based upon production of an entirely useless product, would you try to convince people not to buy it and thus have yourself become unemployed?).
So, at the end of the year, when DHHS' books are reviewed, they can proudly say: "Oh, see what a good job we do! Just look at all the money we've taken from these bad, bad people and given to these poor, helpless folks who deserve it!". Job security.
The Maine office of Child Support is inept, lazy, rude thieves. I relocated to Maine from another state and was working and getting child support. I lost my job, the place I was renting had the septic system go and the owner refused to fix it so we ended up homeless on top of the job loss. Child support stopped coming at the same time. I had no choice but to go on TANF. I was unable to find a job and ended up going back to school to better myself and ensure that I never need assistance again. I am less than a year away from graduating college and thanks to Maine child support I might have to drop out. They took over a year to contact the state I used to live in. Even though I reported that I got some sporadic child support from that other state they didn't do their job and communicate on the case. I thought they had so when I received a few sporadic payments over a few months (total of $800) I thought they knew since the food stamps amount changed off and on. Three years later DHHS accused me of cheating and hiding those child support receipts. Everything was taken away from me two months ago. Now they are taking my child support even though none of the kids the child support arrears are for nor myself receive assistance anymore! As others have mentioned on here...when you can reach them they just try to send you to the voice line or are rude, don't know what they are doing or give you the run around. I reported them to the federal department of HHS child support and intend to push this until they stop stealing the child support!
there is a 1800 number u can call now well there is maine anyways. ive never had any prob with them just with the father keeping a job. the 1800 number i can get statements how much he owes an how much he has paid in every month its 1800-371-7179 but u have to set up a pin its not hard at all.
the bottom line is this-
if you do not want gov. in the family dont open the door, dont invite them in,dont talk to them
and most of all DONT TRUST THEM
